Nkhata Bay bus accident leaves many injured
Over 60 people have sustained various degrees of injuries when a bus they were travelling in from Mzuzu to Blantyre overturned at Kanduli escapement in Nkhata Bay on Tuesday night.
Confirming the accident, Nkhata Bay Police spokesperson Martin Bwanali said the Marcopollo bus, registration BP 3390, developed a brake failure.
He said passengers with serious injuries have been referred to Mzuzu Central Hospital (MCH) while those with minor injuries were treated at Nkhata Bay District Hospital.
In an interview, MCH principal nursing officer Judith Chirembo confirmed the hospital admitting the injured passengers.
“Out of the 53 referred to the hospital, 35 have been admitted while 15 were treated as out patients,” said Chirembo.
Witnesses who passed by the accident scene said by 1pm some survivors were still stranded, not knowing when they would proceed with their journey.
